Dear UCSB Biology Students,

Are you thinking about summer research, graduate school, medical school, or simply growing as a scientist? The MCDB Community Committee is hosting a UCSB Undergraduate Biology REU Writing Workshop to help you prepare strong, competitive applications for NSF and NIH Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REUs).

These 8-week summer research programs pay YOU to conduct research, and typically cover travel, housing, and a full stipend (salary/wage). Applications are usually due in mid-February 2026, so now is the perfect time to start planning. You do NOT need prior research experience, and UCSB has a strong track-record of students being awarded these scholarships.

Workshop Goal: By the end of this short session, you will have peer-reviewed drafts of your REU application materials and clear next steps for completing your submissions.

Who’s Hosting? MCDB faculty and UCSB students who have successfully applied to NSF and NIH REU programs.

When & Where: Thursday, January 15 at 5:00 PM. Location will be emailed to registered students.
